The spools line is controlled with the spool brake on the left side (not the side with the drag star) and your thumb. To control the reels casting effectiveness you need to control the line by controlling the line as it leaves the spool. So that you don't get backlash when casting you need to practice casting with it. It might seem like a strange or mundane request to some of you, but this gift meant a lot to me and I want to do something nice with it. I fish 50/50 from the shore and from a sit-in kayak.

I'm tucked away between Lake Wappapello, MO and Reelfoot Lake, TN, so I plan to primarily go after Crappie and maybe Bass with this setup using jigs and lures. My experience isn't far beyond Zebcos and Ugly Sticks from Walmart and various country stores, so I dont really know what I'm looking for in terms of higher quality and whether or not Rod A would be a good match with Reel B for catching Fish Species C. I believe my grandfather would rather see this reel collect some tasty fish rather than collect dust, so my main request in this post is a recommendation on a quality rod to match with this. What is this worth(though it'll never get sold)? in what ways is it good? In what ways is it bad? Personal accounts, or directions somewhere that may have solid information would be great. I could not find much information on this older model in the practical sense, but would love to learn more. I know it is an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 C, and that a fair number of people collect these items. I come to you fine folks for information on this particular reel. She told me it was squirreled away in a closet somewhere and that if I could find it, I could have it. Since his passing several years ago, I have gotten back into fishing as a regular hobby.During a visit with my grandmother, she told me she bought my grandfather a very nice reel shortly after they got married. Once he and my grandmother started a family, he ran out of time for the sport and shelved a lot of his equipment. In his youth and young adulthood, he was an avid fisherman to the point of casting his own lead sinkers and tying his own river nets. Above is the reel I inherited from my grandfather.
